Lasting is the process of stretching and shaping the upper over the last so it takes on the shoe's final form, and it can be done by hand, where a craftsperson pulls, stretches, and tacks or glues the leather by feel, or by machine, where mechanized pincers and rollers perform the same pulling and shaping in a fraction of the time. Hand-lasting allows for more nuanced adjustment to subtle leather variations and is associated with the highest tier of bespoke and hand-welted shoemaking, while machine lasting delivers strong consistency and dramatically higher production speed for mainstream manufacturing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does hand-lasting produce a better-fitting shoe than machine lasting?
It can, particularly for leather with natural variation or unusual last shapes, since a skilled hand-laster can adjust tension and placement by feel in ways a standardized machine process can't easily replicate, though well-calibrated machine lasting still produces excellent, well-fitting shoes at scale.
Why don't more manufacturers use hand-lasting?
