Hornbeam, a dense, fine-grained hardwood, has long been the traditional material for hand-carved lasts because it holds detailed shaping well and withstands the heat and moisture of shoemaking, while modern plastic and polymer lasts are more common in factory production because they're cheaper, faster to produce via molding, dimensionally stable at scale, and easier to store and reuse across large production runs. Both can produce excellent shoes; the choice largely reflects production method and scale rather than one material being definitively superior.

Hornbeam's Traditional Advantage

Hornbeam has been the wood of choice for hand-carved lasts for generations, prized for being denser and finer-grained than many other hardwoods. That density lets skilled carvers achieve crisp, detailed shaping that holds its form, while the wood's natural resistance to warping serves it well under the heat and moisture that shoemaking inevitably involves — from steaming leather to prolonged handling during construction.

Why Plastic Took Over Factory Production

As shoemaking scaled into industrial production, plastic and polymer lasts became the practical standard. They can be molded quickly and consistently once a shape is finalized, replicated identically across large production runs, and produced at a fraction of the cost and time of hand-carving each one individually — all while holding up reliably to repeated factory use.

It's a common misconception that wood lasts inherently produce better shoes than plastic ones. In reality, the material choice mostly reflects how a shoe is being produced — hand-carved wood suits bespoke and small-batch traditional work, while plastic suits consistent, high-volume manufacturing — rather than one material being categorically superior to the other.
