Cemented Construction

No stitching at all — the outsole is bonded to the upper with industrial adhesive. The lightest, cheapest, and least repairable common construction.

Cemented construction attaches the outsole to the upper using strong industrial adhesive instead of any stitching. It's the fastest and cheapest construction to produce, and makes for a very light, flexible shoe out of the box, but the bond degrades with age, heat, and repeated flexing, and once it fails there's no secondary stitching holding the sole on — making cemented shoes essentially disposable rather than resoleable.

Glue Instead of Stitching

Cemented construction is the simplest of all the methods covered in this encyclopedia: the outsole is bonded directly to the upper using strong industrial adhesive, with no stitching involved anywhere in the attachment. There's no welt, no lockstitch, no rapid stitch — just a chemical bond between two surfaces. That simplicity is exactly why it's the fastest and cheapest construction to manufacture at scale, requiring far less skilled labor and specialized machinery than any stitched alternative.

What You Gain, and What You Give Up

A cemented shoe is light and flexible right out of the box, with none of the break-in period a stitched, structured shoe requires. For casual and budget footwear, that's a real advantage. The trade-off shows up over time: adhesive bonds degrade with heat, age, and repeated flexing in a way that stitching simply doesn't. Once that bond starts to fail, there's no secondary attachment holding the sole to the upper — the shoe is, structurally, done. This is the single biggest functional difference between cemented shoes and every other construction in this encyclopedia: they aren't designed to be repaired, they're designed to be replaced.

Spotting Cemented Construction

The clearest tell is at the edge where the upper meets the sole: a cemented shoe shows a smooth, unbroken bond line with no stitching visible anywhere, in contrast to the stitched seam of a Blake shoe or the raised, stitched welt strip of a Goodyear-welted shoe. If you can't find any stitching at the sole edge at all, you're very likely looking at a cemented shoe.

Cemented vs. Goodyear welt: Goodyear welt sits at the opposite end of the spectrum — built specifically for indefinite resoleability, at a much higher price and with a genuine break-in period cemented shoes don't require.

Are all cemented shoes low quality?
Not automatically — cementing is used across a huge range of price points, including some higher-end casual and athletic-adjacent footwear where flexibility matters more than long-term resoleability. But within dress shoes specifically, cementing is almost always a sign of a lower price tier, since it's the cheapest construction to produce at scale.
Can a cemented shoe be resoled?
Rarely in any meaningful way. Some cobblers can re-cement a new sole, but there's no welt or stitched seam to work with, and the adhesive bond is generally weaker and less durable than the original factory bond. Most cemented shoes are replaced rather than repaired once the sole fails.
