Bologna construction, also called sacchetto (Italian for "little bag"), sews the upper and lining together inside-out, then turns the whole assembly right-side out before attaching a thin, flexible sole — with little to no rigid lining, stiffening, or lasting board inside. The result is the lightest, most unstructured shoe construction available, prized for soft, unlined summer loafers and driving shoes but offering minimal structure, support, or durability compared to lasted constructions like Blake or Goodyear welt.

Built Like a Little Bag

Bologna construction takes its nickname — sacchetto, Italian for "little bag" — from exactly how it's built. Instead of lasting the upper over a rigid form the way Goodyear-welted or Blake-stitched shoes are, the upper and lining are stitched together inside-out, much like sewing a small pouch. That inside-out assembly is then turned right-side out, and a thin, flexible sole is attached to the bottom. There's little to no internal lasting board, stiff heel counter, or rigid insole — the shoe is, structurally, closer to a soft pouch for the foot than a built-up dress shoe.

Why Give Up Structure

The entire appeal of Bologna construction is softness. Without a rigid lasting process or internal stiffening, the shoe drapes and folds with the foot almost immediately, with none of the break-in period a structured welted shoe requires. That makes it ideal for warm-weather, low-formality footwear — unlined loafers, driving shoes, soft slip-ons — where the goal is a barefoot-like feel rather than the support and shape-holding of a formal dress shoe.

The Trade-Offs

That same lack of structure means Bologna-constructed shoes offer less support, less water resistance, and less overall durability than lasted constructions. The thin sole wears through faster, there's minimal protection from wet ground, and the unstructured upper simply can't be reworked as many times as a shoe built around a proper insole and welt. It's a deliberate trade: comfort and lightness for structure and longevity — the right choice for a summer loafer, the wrong choice for a shoe expected to handle daily commuting in any weather.
