The major men's dress-shoe constructions — Goodyear welt, Blake stitch, hand-welted, Norwegian welt, Bologna, cemented, and stitchdown — differ mainly in how the outsole attaches to the upper, which determines water resistance, flexibility, repairability, and price. Goodyear welt trades flexibility for durability and resoleability; cemented construction trades durability for lightness and low cost; Blake and hand-welted sit closer to the flexible, refined end of the spectrum.

One Decision, Every Downstream Trade-Off

How a shoe's outsole attaches to its upper is the single most consequential construction decision a shoemaker makes. It governs how the shoe flexes, how well it resists water, whether it can be resoled at all, and ultimately what it costs. The Welted Family

Goodyear welt uses a two-seam process with an intermediate welt strip, keeping stitching at the shoe's outer edge and off its interior — the standard for durable, resoleable dress shoes and the construction behind Ambrogio's Wholecut Oxfords. Hand-welted construction follows the same principle entirely by hand, producing a closer, more refined welt at a bespoke price point. Norwegian welt adds a second, visible stitch running through the upper itself for maximum water resistance, typically reserved for boots rather than dress shoes.

The Direct-Attach Family

Blake stitch sews the outsole directly to the upper and insole in a single seam with no welt, producing a slimmer, more flexible shoe at some cost to water resistance. Bologna, or sacchetto, construction goes further, wrapping the lining around the upper like a soft pouch for maximum comfort in unlined summer shoes. Cemented construction skips stitching altogether, bonding the outsole with industrial adhesive — the lightest and cheapest option, but with no path to resoling once the bond fails.

Choosing Between Them

There's no universally "best" construction — only the right one for how a shoe will be worn. A daily-wear business oxford expected to last a decade favors Goodyear welt. A dress shoe worn occasionally with tailored trousers, prized for its slim profile, may be better served by Blake stitch. A rugged boot built for wet climates points toward Norwegian welt. Matching construction to use case, rather than defaulting to whichever sounds most prestigious, is the mark of an informed buyer.
